I've been asked a question concerning something which applies to the purpose of his forum and also my operation in an aspect of my calling. That has to do with confrontation, correction, and/or rebuke. Basically, the question which was raised was:
"Would God ever have a prophet address an issue through the internet, or any other way other than direct confrontation?"
Addressing the question as it's asked, the simple answer is, YES.
There are many reasons which would move God to address something through the internet, through mail, or even by phone, not excluding direct in person confrontation. Because of the current system which many are a part of, it is often a very difficult thing for a 'common' person to approach a member of leadership. The majority of institutional assemblies, are set up in such of a sructured, controlled way that it all but eliminates the opportunity to issue a public rebuke, or deliver public correction simply do the the structure of the system. In the days of the 1st century apostles, synagogue life was much more participatory and participants were encouraged to interact and be a vocal part of the assembly. So these types of operations were more easily possible, though the reactions to such operations could still be the same as most today. But now, assembly participation has become such of a controlled situation, leadership has really attempted to close the doors on these types of roles and operations being allowed to work in their midst.
That being said, let me give some situations where the Lord may use such a medium as the internet to do such a thing, using and example of a situation in which I was recently involved. I was part of a conversation which was originally centered around the subject of prophets at the website called Frances and Friends. As far as I'm aware this is the site of Jimmy Swaggerts wife or some people who support his ministry. As the discussion progressed, I was forced to point out something Jimmy Swaggert does that's unclean, peddling what is claimed to be the word/words of God. There was no intentions of rebuking Jimmy Swaggert, just point out that there is even corruption in the regular visitors of this websites favorite ministry/preacher. The Lord uses all means at His disposal to warn His people of danger, corruption, and sin. In this case, all that was being done was making people aware that they shouldn't be placing this man and his ministry on as high of a pedestal as many of them are doing. Many people have a tendency to create idols out of popular or influencial ministers and ministries without even understand that they are doing so.
Another situation in which the Lord may use a medium other than open, public confrontation in delivering reproof or rebuke could be when it's early on in the recipients journey down the path of corruption. Our Lord rarely will delivery a stinging rebuke or send an aggressive message right off the bat. His ways are to start out gently with His attempts at correction, with each subsequent delivery become more and more direct and strong in order to get the recipients attention.
For instance, a person may have turned into error/sin and be unaware. So when the person, begins walking in it, they start to feel that somethings wrong, but they can't put there finger on what's giving them that nagging feeling and due to various reasons, they don't really stop and search themselves to see if anything that they are walking in could be unclean before the Lord. After a while they become numb to that nagging feeling, and this forces the Lord to send a stronger message. So He may bring a passing conversation across the persons path, which touches upon the issue which deals with the recipients uncleanness. After hearing something in the conversation, the recipient feels a stinging prick, with the strength of it proportionate to the recipients sensitivity to His Holy Spirit. Oftentimes, the Lord will uses these types of methods numerous times growing in strength to make it obvious to the person that they are running into these subjects so often that it must be because the Lord is trying to show them something. But oftentimes the issue which the Lord is attempting to address is something which benefits the recipient, like bringing them financial prosperity, influence, power, and prestige. Because the error/sin stokes a persons carnality in some way, the recipient will oftentimes justify or condone what they are walking in and dismiss these things. It's only after a person has really hardened themselves from these cues, that our Lord will start sending people to directly address an issue, and even then He will oftentimes send numerous people to directly confront the issue with steadily increasing directness and boldness. It's only shortly before the Lord is at the end of His patience that He will send people to openly and publicly call out the recipient on the issue which needs to be addressed. This is because in our Lord's mercy, He's trying everything He can to avoid having to punish or even judge the recipient of His correction.
This process can, and often does, play out over a matter of years until it reaches the point where the Lord sends someone to publicly call out a minister or ministry. Be assured that when this happens, it's only because the Lord has sent many messages and people to the recipient and a public address is necessary because the recipient has refused to repent. With the current structure of the institutionalized system meant to insulate the leadership from being publicly addressed, it's no wonder that our Lord would use any and all means at His disposal to attempt to bring back those leaders, as well as those who are following in their sins/corruption, from the path which they are walking and have been walking.
Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. Behold, I will send you the prophet whose God is YHWH before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall restore the understanding of the ancestors to their descendants, and the thoughts of the descendants to their ancestors, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
